How Important is Early Learning for a Child’s Development?

A child is constantly learning new things and when they reach the age of 3 or 4, the time is right to introduce them to a local early learning program and like regular school, there are learning objectives although they are not academic.

Explore in a secure environment

One aspect of an early learning program is the ability to explore in a safe setting. Take Tarneit early learning centre as an example, they have a soft room where the young children can engage their senses in a safe and caring environment. Activities are diverse and last no longer than 20-30 minutes, as young kids have a very short attention span.

Developing social skills

This is one of the most important goals of an early learning program, as the youngsters mix with others of the same age. Correct behaviour modelled by the teachers and staff and this quickly has a positive impact on the young learners. They learn how to respect others and their property, while good manners are also introduced; it is important that you model this at home, otherwise the child may be confused.

Nurturing self-confidence

Self-confidence is important, especially at a young age and the teachers praise the students when they get things right, helping them to develop a positive view of themselves; lack of self-esteem can cause problems in later life.

Good manners

It is important that young children are respectful and teachers and staff do model good manners, which is usually all that is required. The students learn about patience and they are happy to wait their turn during activities; kindness and compassion are important aspects of any early learning program. By the time regular school starts, your child will be well-mannered and polite and this sticks with them throughout their life.

Start with a Google search to locate early learning programs in your area, then browse a few websites and create a shortlist; you can book a visit via their website, it is never a good idea to turn up unannounced. Prepare a few questions to ask the school principal and you will be in a position to make an informed decision.
