Transforming a Bare Wall into a Green Work of Art – When the Watering is Just a Hosing Down

Growing up in England it was always a bit daunting to have a father who was an expert gardener. Us kids tended to let him get on with it in the suburbs of London while we played snooker in the dining room.

If we ventured outside it was to be turned off the old man’s luxurious lawn and directed to the local park for our games of football.

Happy days they were but it has always stayed with me that I am hardly green-fingered unless digging into a pack of bright green sweets.

Moving to Australia was the best thing I ever did. But while it changed me in terms of enjoying the natural environment it never inspired me to be a gardener.

In Sydney, my wife and I had bought a property that had a small garden. She chastised me for even thinking about hiring someone to look after it. I was forced to try and made a reasonably ham-fisted attempt at lawns and a few flower beds. Not bad for a novice even though I say so myself.

But what really concerned me was the bare wall next to our pride and joy, a very nice outdoor pool that was one of the reasons we moved there. A few potted plants put up against it still only served to highlight that this was a plain grey wall!

This was when the reluctant gardener saw something about fake green walls during one of those chance meanderings down an internet wormhole.

It got me thinking. If that wall was covered in something that didn’t need to grow it could look fantastic and completely change the feel of the pool as a place amongst concrete to a place amongst nature.

The range of coverings was extensive but the basic premise was the same. Once installed it would look beautiful and just need the occasional hosing down to keep off the dust.

With the wall panel calculator, we were able to assess quickly what this would cost and then came an onsite consultation in which we were confident we had gone with the right people. The covering we chose in the “coastal range” fitted in well with our own garden and the foliage of the vicinity.

We were not after getting visitors to think that it was real growth (tended by my amateur hand – dream on!). We wanted a stunning visual backdrop that would become part of the scenery. Now nobody really talks about it but they sure feel the vibe as if we have a new pool location at parties.

The installation was a breeze as I peered out from the living room planning my next Sydney trip out to discover more about my new homeland.

Even as it was going up you could see the transformation from gray to green was a winner and all utilising the best quality materials to minimise risks from fire.

Green fingers, no…green walls YES!
